Executive summary

India's startup ecosystem and enterprise demand attract a growing number of startups from Japan, Korea and Taiwan. Most do not need to start with a full Indian company. This guide sets out three entry routes, explains what India's DPIIT startup recognition covers under the rules revised in 2026, and lists the questions to settle first.

Three entry routes

1.Sell or pilot from home. – Contract with an Indian customer or partner from your home entity. Lowest commitment; see our pilot guide.
2.Work through a partner. – A distributor, systems integrator or manufacturer represents you locally. See our partner checklist.
3.Set up an Indian entity. – Usually a private limited company. FDI up to 100% is permitted under the automatic route in most sectors, subject to conditions. A private company needs at least two directors, and section 149(3) of the Companies Act, 2013 requires one director to stay in India at least 182 days in the financial year.

DPIIT startup recognition

Startup India sets the recognition criteria. Following a revision announced on 5 February 2026:

•The entity must be incorporated in India as a private limited company, or registered as a partnership firm, LLP or cooperative society.
•It is a startup for up to 10 years from incorporation, or 20 years for a Deep Tech startup.
•Turnover must be below INR 200 crore in every previous financial year, or INR 300 crore for a Deep Tech startup.
•It must work towards innovation or improvement of products, services or processes; entities formed by splitting or reconstructing an existing business do not qualify.

Applications go through the National Single Window System. Recognised startups can apply separately for certain tax exemptions; these are approved case by case and are not automatic.

Questions to resolve first

1.Who is your first Indian customer, and what decision will a pilot support?
2.Do you need local staff now, or can a partner cover the first year?
3.Where will intellectual property sit — in the home company or the Indian entity?
4.Which home-country programmes, such as JETRO, KOTRA or Taiwan's trade-promotion bodies, offer support for India, and what are their conditions?
5.What funding does an Indian entity need, and from whom?

Country context: Japan, Korea and Taiwan.

How Nirji Ventures engages

The Nirji Community is a private network for companies and startups exploring Asia Pacific expansion; expressing interest is free and does not promise funding, introductions or programme admission. NirjiX, the group's consulting firm, takes on paid market-entry, partner-diligence and project-execution engagements. The two paths are separate: Community participation is not a consulting engagement, and consulting enquiries do not require Community membership.

よくある質問

Can a foreign-owned Indian company get DPIIT startup recognition?

DPIIT recognition is available to eligible private limited companies, partnership firms, LLPs and cooperative societies incorporated in India that meet the age, turnover and innovation criteria. Eligibility for a specific foreign-owned entity should be confirmed against the current notification.

What are the DPIIT startup recognition limits in 2026?

Under the framework revised in February 2026, an entity is a startup for up to 10 years from incorporation with turnover below INR 200 crore in any previous financial year. For Deep Tech startups the limits are 20 years and INR 300 crore.

Does a startup need an Indian company to sell in India?

Not always. Many start by contracting with Indian customers or partners from their home entity, or by running a pilot. A local company becomes useful once there are local staff, local invoicing or a need for Indian startup recognition.
